Meeting of the Kigman Rotary Club: Mar 12, 2008
Announcement
- Please don't forget to pay your quarterly dues before the end of April. Having this information in before the end of April will help us with our annual tax preparation and next year's budgeting.
- The Annual Homer Johnston Memorial Rotary Charity Golf Tournament is just around the corner (April 5) and we all need to pitch in and get our sponsorships and teams together. The goal is for each member (yes, ALL of us) to bring in at least two sponsors. Contact Cullen for the current list of who's committed to which businesses. Thanks for the help everyone - this is our BIGGEST fund raiser of the year! You can find all of the details on our official tournament website.
- Our Rotary installation for the new year has been scheduled for January 29 at the Hualapai Recreation Area #3. Please mark this date on your calendar. More details will be available soon.
- There will be a new member orientation March 27 at 07:00 AM at Calico's. Remember that attending these orientations is a great way to make a make up, or refresh on some of the Rotary basics. Additionally, it's a great way to show our support for our new members. We hope to see you there!
- Doc brought in eleven Tee Sign sponsors! Thank you Doc - great job!
- Billy's Easter Egg project went great this past Thursday and Friday. We were able to work with the Manzanita Elementary School and identify 18 children who might have otherwise not had an Easter and we supplied them with baskets, toys, candy, coloring books, crayons and pencils. The children were truly appreciative. We owe a big thank you to Gretchen Dorner, Manzanita's principal, for gathering up the children, Roger for helping coordinate this event, and Billy for putting it together. Thanks all! A photo journal of the event will be up soon - please look for it sometime next week.
Student Rotarian
Our outgoing Student Rotarian, Chelsey Burden, gave her talk about the conflicts in Darfur and the role of good people in the global view of human rights. "Why should we care?" she posed rhetorically, "because" she said and then quoted Edmund Burke "The only thing needed for the triumph of evil is for good people to do nothing." She reminded us that although it is easy to forget or ignore the genocides and persistent violence in the region of Darfur and others because it is not right here in Kingman staring us in the face, we should not.
Chelsey is passionate about ensuring that violence and conflict are put to rest, not only in Darfur, but all over the world, including here in Kingman. Following the attack of a high school teacher at KHS, Chelsey helped organize and stage a peaceful protest against violence with other students. She said, "We all have the choice to live peacefully."
Thank you for your talk, Chelsey. You truly embody the Rotary motto of "Service Above Self" and we expect great things from you!
